The Sernas Family: Three Generations Defending Mezcal Authenticity
By Victorioso Mezcal
For nearly a century, the Sernas family has upheld traditional Oaxacan mezcal craftsmanship — a living lineage that resists compromise at every turn.
The story of Victorioso Mezcal is, at its core, a family story. Three generations of the Sernas family in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, bound by a shared conviction: that the old ways are the right ways, and that authenticity is not a marketing strategy but a moral obligation.
The Grandfather's Foundation
The Sernas family's mezcal tradition was established by the current patriarch's grandfather, who learned his craft in the early 20th century from maestros whose knowledge stretched back to the colonial era. Working with tools that had changed little in generations — earthen pit ovens, wooden fermentation vats, handmade copper stills — he produced mezcal for the local community, sold in clay jugs at the weekly market.
His approach to the craft was unsentimental but profound: use the best agave available, never rush the process, and never compromise the spirit with additives or shortcuts. These principles, passed down verbally through two subsequent generations, remain the foundation of every bottle of Victorioso produced today.
The Second Generation: Expanding the Vision
The grandfather's son carried the tradition forward during a period of rapid change in the mezcal industry. The 1970s and 1980s saw growing pressure to industrialize production to meet expanding demand — pressure that divided many mezcal-producing families between tradition and commercial opportunity.
The Sernas family chose tradition. The son invested not in modern equipment but in deeper knowledge: studying agave ecology, refining fermentation techniques, and cultivating relationships with the wild agave populations in the hills surrounding Santiago Matatlán. He understood that the raw material was the foundation of everything and devoted decades to understanding and protecting it.
The Third Generation: Victorioso
The current generation of the Sernas family took the decision to share their mezcal with the world — not through compromise, but through amplification. Victorioso Mezcal was created to bring artisanal Oaxacan mezcal to international markets while maintaining absolute fidelity to the family's methods.
Every decision about Victorioso's production reflects this commitment: wild agave harvested at full maturity, three-day earthen pit roasts, open-air fermentation with wild yeasts, double distillation in handmade copper stills, and nothing added beyond what comes out of the still. The 2022 L.A. Spirits Awards medals — Platinum for Tobalá, Gold for Espadín and Ensamble, Silver for Cuishe — are external validation of what three generations of integrity produce.
