My grandfather did not set out to build a brand. He set out to make mezcal the way his father had taught him — slowly, by hand, with patience for the agave and respect for the fire. Almost a hundred years later, very little about that has changed in our palenque, and that is exactly the point.
Victorioso is the name we gave to what our family has always done. It is the espadín that grows in the hills above our village, the cuishe and the tobalá that take a lifetime to mature, the smoke that rises from the conical pit at dawn, the tahona pulled by horse over the roasted heart of the plant. It is the hands of three generations of mezcaleros — my grandfather, my father, and now me — doing the same small things, very carefully, for a very long time.
We could make more. We choose not to. Every bottle of Victorioso carries the cost of that choice, and the gift of it too: a mezcal that tastes of the mountain it came from, of the wood that roasted it, of the people who shaped it. Nothing added, nothing rushed, nothing borrowed.
