Rooted in the ancient traditions of the Zapotec warriors and carried forward by the Serna family, our mezcal is a tribute to those who have fought to protect heritage, quality, and the true essence of this sacred spirit.<\/p>

The Serna Family: Guardians of Tradition<\/h5>

The Serna family has long stood for authenticity and excellence in mezcal-making. Their journey began in 1927, when Eugenio Sernas Sr. started cultivating agave in Matatl\u00e1n, Oaxaca, the heart of mezcal country. By 1955<\/strong>, his dedication and expertise led to the establishment of one of the first five registered palenques<\/strong> and mezcal brands in the region\u2014paving the way for generations of master mezcaleros.<\/p>

But authenticity is not just about tradition\u2014it\u2019s about standing firm when quality is at risk.<\/p>

The Fight for Pure Mezcal<\/strong><\/h5>

In the 1970s, as industrialization threatened the purity of mezcal, many producers began cutting corners\u2014adding sugars, artificial flavorings, and even highly flammable objects to speed up the cooking process. This new wave of production jeopardized the soul of mezcal, turning a time-honored craft into a mass-produced imitation.<\/p>

Refusing to let this happen, Juan Sernas, alongside other dedicated mezcaleros, led a strike against these practices. For two months, they stood their ground along Iturbide Road, from the bridge to the main square of Matatl\u00e1n, demanding better oversight and protection for true, artisanal mezcal. Their resilience paid off, leading to greater regulation and safeguarding the integrity of mezcal production in Oaxaca.<\/p>
